New Car Chat

I'm going to get a new car pretty soon. Was going to get it this year but will wait now til after the new year I think.

When I say new I mean new/used. I don't want to waste cash on a showroom car.

Basically I just want a nice car, quite big & with a reasonable bit of power 2ltr will likely do.

Needs to have a big boot for my golf bats & trolley & so I don't have to take my wheels off my trolley & driver out of bag to get it in boot :(

I'm thinking of getting the Passat cc (170) it looks nice & is a nice size & has enough power to be acceptable. Haven't taken one out on a drive yet but will soon. Anyone got one or driven one or know anyone with one?

Also like the Insignia. Driven that a few times & really liked it, even though the the back window is pretty shit from inside imo. Like looking out a tunnel.

Any other good suggestions for me to look into, or advice on the ones I have mentioned?

Probably looking at spending between £15k & £20k but no more than £20k

Get the biggest bastard of a 4WD you can afford, stick bull bars on the front and roll bars over the windows.

When you test drive it, make sure you offroad it up Bennachie, because some of these '4 Wheelers' are about as offroad-capable as a 1.1 Ford Fiesta pulling a caravan.

I miss my Jeep Cherokee.

Now I'm driving a family-friendly orthopedic shoe of a motor.

Fantastic safety rating, but when the Big One hits it'll be as much use to me as a 20 year old is to Jimmy Savile.

Now then.

An audi? I'm astonished Redstar, wouldn't have seen you as an Audi guy.

For some reason any time I read the word 'Audi' I hear it in Arnold Schwarzenneger's voice.

Ged to da Audee!

Anyone else have that picture in their head?

No?

Regardless, I'm downing Buttershots.

I'm about to buy a new car and have been round all the garages and I think I've considered just about every car going.

I was going to be sensible and get another Jeep Wrangler, but unfortunately the Jeep garage is also connected to the Dodge garage.

A little voice in my head said 'Do it! Do something stupid for once in your life. This is realistically the only time in your life you're going to be able to get such a stupid, idiotic car. '

So, just waiting for the showroom to get the 2013 models in and I'll be purchasing one of these demons!

Mondeo then.

I did think about them as well but in all honesty, I prefer the Insignia over them.

Damn good choice. look's fantastic :applause:

Land Rover Discovery.

If I was going for a 4wd, I'd rather the Toyota Hylux. Used to have a crew cab as company car & loved it. Treated it like shite though & it help up well considering what I put it through.

I got a new(ish) car last week. Had to get rid of my 206 GTI cos the fuel and insurance costs were crippling me, plus it was pretty old and had seen better days. Was sensible and downsized to a Corsa SXI, only 1.2 engine, so fairly notice the drop in power, but it's fine and nice to drive. I'm too old to be whizzing around in a boy racer motor now anyway!

Well done you! Not enough people doing this. What a choice! How much is it setting you back?

Nice car but American cars and build quality don't go together and the interior of most those cars are cheap and tacky.

If you want something different, how about an Alfa Romeo 159 Ti? Forget the myth about the build quality as its a good car and is a head turner, check out the interior!

Think it's your luck with Alfas. My mate bought a GT 3 1/2 year ago second hand. He must nearly have spent the same again on getting it fixed. Hardly away from the garage.

Have had a varied car history over the last 20 odd years. In the last 5 years though have had some nice ones, but have petered out to the current thing.

My last four cars engine sizes have been 4.0lt, 3.5lt, 2.5lt and now a 2.0lt - basically I am poofing out. Have also spent 50 grand on a car before - not this time though, couldn't justify it. I now own a bloody Nissan Qasq - fuck don't even know how to spell it, that's how little I am interested in the damn thing. It's about a year old and I bought it new. Would I recommend it? Nope, unless you have a baby imminent, get something decent while you can.

Ta very much!

I'll probably end up regretting it, but sod it. I've always wanted one and can't think of a good reason not to buy one.

As I say I was going to go for a Jeep Wrangler or maybe a VW Scirocco, but you only live once and all that nonsense.

Sat down with the guy at the dealership and went through the spec I would like. Came to AED 140,000 which is just shy of

Go for the Insignia. Bought one couple of weeks ago. Diesel Auto. Cracking car to drive.

Thought about getting Audi, BMW, Merc etc but kids are young enough to dismantle a car in 10 mins so went for value for money (and inexpensive to fix, insure, tax etc).

Cracking boot space and when you put the foot down it can shift like shit off a shovel (compared to other 2 litre diesels of course)

At the moment I have the cc slightly ahead but mostly as first time I seen it I liked the look of it & took an interest then. Had already driven the Insignia & have driven them a couple of times since & still like them. Final decision (between these two at least) will likely come down to when I finally get around to test driving the cc.

It is very close between the two for me & in all honesty, I think I'd be pretty happy with either.

Also thought about Audi,BMW & Merc etc. but as you say, the others are (also imo) better value for money cos they are cheaper to fix, insure etc. but also cheaper to buy for newer cars.

If I'm spending £20k for example on a cc I can get one that's only 6 months old :dontknow:

Passat CC and Insignia are not exactly in the same class- the Passat is a much better (and more expensive) car.

Insignia is supposed to be pretty good for a Vauxhall, but the residuals on the Passat will be much better when you come to change again.

Someone above mentions the 159 Ti - great car to drive, but can be problems with finicky bits - and the EGR valve. But if you're buying at 3-4 years old, it should have had most of the depreciation already and you'll struggle to find a better looking (and driving) car for what it'll cost (c.
