Watches...need Info

Recommended Posts

dinna see the point of buying a second hand watch.

ive got a decent watch, few hunner quid, nothing hugely expensive.

its stylish, classy, looks good and tells the time.

dont see the need for anything more expensive, certainly not the 4figure jobs

What is the difference between a watch that costs £2000 and one that costs £200? Both tell the time incredibly accurately so i'm not sure why anyone would pay thousands for a time piece. That's just me personally.

Whats the difference between a 5 euro t-shirt from the looky looky manny and the YSL or fitiver it is you put on when you head into town on a Saturday night? Both are t-shirts, both cover your nipples and your belly...

I'm not comparing a £5 watch with a Rolex though. In clothes terms, there isn't much difference between a £25-£35 T-shirt and a £100 t-shirt other than the label. You can't put a £200 watch into the same category as a primark t-shirt in terms of build quiality! I've had watches around that price mark that have lasted for years until I decided to get a new one as I was bored.

People lumping out 2k + on a watch are not generally not paying for accuracy. A £100 G-Shock will be as accurate as you can get. If your buying a decent mechanical piece then your paying for the craftsmanship, the movement and the brand. Also, if you buy sensibly then you wont lose money on a piece.

I can't argue with this answer.

From what i've heard from people buying expensive watches, they are basically an investment rather than just something to strap on the wrist and tell the time.

Fair enough.

In watch terms the £200 D&G is a £5 fake t-shirt when compared to a Rolex or an Omega.

I wasnt going to get too into it but if I have to...

Take 2 watches, a D&G and a Omega just for example.

D&G

You are paying for nothing but the name and the fake bling look.

The movement inside the watch will be worth between £5-20, bog standard Chinese, Swiss if you're lucky and the craftsmanship of the gear train etc will be poor. Most likely machine finished, definitely low grade metal and while the amount of jewels in a watch only makes a difference to a certain point these will most likely have the minimum and they are more likely to be synthetic. While the watch looks pretty on the outside, and thats debatable as well IMO, they are utter shite inside.

This watch will also be water resistant and not water proof, will come with a 1 year guarantee and if worn daily will last 2-3 years before the insides begin to rust and the finish falls off. All fake... by that I mean fake gold or gold plate, piss poor movement and bits of glass made to look like diamonds that will fall out within a year.

Omega

With an Omega you are paying slightly for the name but their name is a good one in watches for a reason.

The movement inside an Omega will be hand made and on its own worth between £200-500, will have ruby's as the time keeper, will be a completely sealed unit so the inners wont start to rust. They will come with anything between a 10-25 year guarantee, if it looks gold it is and its 18 ct, diamonds are actually diamonds... You get the drift.

Both tell the time but one is the equivalent of a Citroen C1 and the other is a Porsche Carrera.

At the end of the day, like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. If you like real quality and you like watches you'll buy a real quality watch for anything up to whatever you can afford. If you put more stock in something else in your life, like cars or holidays you'll spend your money on that and head to the closest shopping centre and give H Samuels your watch money instead.
