Firefighters' Strike

can't see how a 56 year old these days can claim to be so unfit they can't work. If that's the case you haven't looked after yourself very well.

However, i don't like seeing one groups pensions changed by the government when the bankers got to keep their ridiculous ones. Saying that, they should try paying into a regular stakeholder pension and see what they get back - all the firemen are saying 'we payed nearly £300 a month'. Wow that would not get you a fireman's penion in a regular pension and therein lies the problem.

Caker of a job, sleeping and playing pool, fire or crash once in a blue moon to lift the spirits, they can fuck off with their strikes, don't like the changes then plenty people will take their places.

whast the training\education level required for this job anyway?

nae much, thats what.

your damn right mate; plenty folk could do that job.

wouldn't say the firefighters are overpaid to begin with, but to end up with a pension at 60 that's just a few thousand shy of your full working wage is damn good.

"A firefighter who earns £29,000, and retires after a full career aged 60, will get a £19,000-a-year pension, rising to £26,000 with the state pension. An equivalent private sector pension pot would be worth over half a million pounds and require firefighters to contribute twice as much.

"The firefighter pension age of 60 was introduced in 2006 and is in line with the police and armed forces.

i'm surprised to see that firefighters aren't considered essential services and blocked from striking? :dontknow:

What should they do, lie down and accept the cuts? Only fighting for what they signed up for and on top of a 1% pay rise in four years. Seems to be a lot of negativity towards these people who may save your arse or your loved ones arse for that matter.

The private sector now have to work till about 67 then retire on a pittance unless they've saved loads, the firemen are just being brought into the real World, they're still getting to retire early but with people living longer they're having to move with the times like everyone else. If the money was there to pay them all in retirement then fine but it isn't, same as everyone else.

until people grasp the reality of statements like the above, they go around thinking they've been hard done to. Never met a hard up fireman, they all work second jobs (most folk wouldn't have the time) plus plenty of guys offshore in their 50s seem to manage fine. 56 or 57 is simply not old these days.

Public pensions are a nonsense, and public sector staff have no idea of economic reality. Can't imagine much public symapthy for this strike.

anyone would think they're being asked to put out fires till they're 90.

people in their 50s run marathons ffs.

They did a cracking job of washing my car last Saturday in Portsoy. Nice coffee morning as well and the bairns got to sit in the fire engine.

More power to their elbow is what I saw.

You're being controversial here for the sake of it T&P. Stick to Monkey House weeds. Has that been sorted yet?

Anyone who is so concerned about their pension is hardly suitable for the job anyway.

Firemen should be maverick types with scant regard for their own well being. Be a good job for heroin addicts and criminals serving sentences of 5 years or more.
