Russell Anderson - Long Term Replacement

Recommended Posts

I think it would be a fair guess to think Anderson will retire at the end of this season so a long term replacement will be required to be confirmed from within the club or signed in January/summer.

What are the options?

Current players:

Ash Taylor - the man in possession and going to be given every chance to prove himself. A long way to go though to confirm Ando retires and no centre back signs.

Andy Considine - the longest serving player at Pittodrie and many would argue deserves the chance but McInnes has only started him at centre half a couple of times so seems like an unlikely shout. Left sided.

Joe Shaughnessey - has never started a match at centre half under McInnes. Needs a miracle.

Possible signings:

Shaun Hutchinson - the Fulham man has had a similar career path to Reynolds. An initial loan deal could be a shout. Right sided.

Gary Warren - the experienced Caley man quietly goes about his business but fast becoming one of the most reliable right sided centre backs in Scotland

Danny Wilson - might be available if Hearts fail to secure promotion - predominantly left sided tho which going by Consi McInnes just seems reluctant to pair with Reynolds

Clearly Ash Taylor is the man we are hoping comes good but dont think we should rule out the possibility of signing a centre back next summer when Ando retires.

Michael Rose and Scott McKenna will hopefully be given an opportunity to progress

McKenna left sided too. Seems there is heaps of left sided players in squad compared to some previous eras

I think they will get a chance to progress with a clearing of the decks this summer. Think Murray, Robertson and Shaughnessey will all be released along with Ando retiring

What's the consensus on Ash Taylor? Not able to tell much from the footage I've seen of him but it looks like he was at fault for both goals in the Dundee game. Only got that to go by and the fact that we are conceding goals pretty frequently at the moment with him and Reynolds as a pairing. Does he bring Reynolds down?

I like him.

Reminds me of Brian Irvine.

Tall and gangly and plenty of folk who know nothing about football thinking he's shite.

Yes he has had a couple of bad moments touch wise but he's a defender first and foremost. If he was ace at passing the ball he'd be in midfield.

Does the job he's there to do quite well. Will only improve with time.

Ash Taylor would benefit massively from playing along side Anderson as opposed to Reynolds.

The boy has potential and I think he will eventually be better than Considine but I agree he needs to be dropped and used sparingly this season.

The reason we've been leaking goals is as much to do with missing Ryan Jack as it is Ash Taylor.

The goalkeeper also needs to take a fair bit of blame.

I think Taylor will come good. He certainly wins everything in the air that comes near him. He has this over the other defenders. When you have a keeper like Clangers you need that to defend corners, free kicks and when the other team starts to lob high balls into the box. The mistakes that he has made has been unfortunate but given time I think he will be a decent defender. The defence has been under more pressure since the change of formation and the loss of Jack. Reynolds hasn't looked bullet proof of late. Given time and the return of Jack our defence will be fine.

my opinion so far on Taylor has been, started crap, got better but has become crap again. Still to be convinced as I thought he was mince the last two games

Can't disagree. There did seem to be some improvement after the opening day disaster. You're spot on though, the last couple of games have been shocking.
