England V Iceland (1 - 2)

English football in crisis?

National team just papped out of a major tournament by 3 puffins, 2 fishermen and the lead singer of Sigur Ros. Meanwhile the EPL's status is on a shoogly peg courtesy of the Brexit vote, which (just to take one example) will make it impossible for English clubs to sign anyone from an EU country under the age of 18. So, that's the business model of Chelsea completely fucked, for example.

What will happen to all these clubs paying farcical wages when the quality of the league inevitably diminishes and the Sky money dries up? England is heading straight to a 'bonfire of the vanities', and I personally cannot wait.

That can only be a good thing for young English players which will benefit the national side in the long run. And ours.

I don't think their quality of players is getting much worse. I think the issue is that they haven't had a manager since Hoddle who is strong enough to make the big decisions. I really thought Capello would change things but he went with the Lampard and Gerrard midfield pairing that stifled them for years.

Playing to suit their strengths, this England team could have done something. Going without wingers and then playing the ball wide all the time is just one example of where they were let down tactically.

I saw Gareth Southgate is the favourite. That's hilarious.

I still say them not taking Defoe was a massive mistake and as for picking Wilshere

Southgate oh dear :hysterical::hysterical: :hysterical:

I dunno if you get the same coverage Bloots, but I was listening to Talksport just as Iceland scored the winner against Austria and the commentator was celebrating the goal like England had just beaten Germany. It was then back to the presenters who were celebrating finishing second for the easier draw (despite then having France, Italy, Germany, Spain etc to navigate afterwards.

The BBC had Rio and Gary Lineker talking about how easy a game it should be, with Thierry Henry constantly pointing out that Iceland are no mugs and they laughed him off.

At half time last night the pundits on ITV were discussing whether Joe Hart will be dropped for the quarter final or not, like them coming back and winning was a foregone conclusion.

I think you've nailed it with the arrogance remark. There is a news piece slating Joe Hart at the moment. Mentions how he is a great guy with the cameras on, but very arrogant towards journos when they are off.

To be fair to the pundits last night, they did say 'if England can turn this around, should Hart be dropped for the quarters' as opposed to 'should hart be dropped for the quarters', as you're alluding too.

Maybe they should have started with, "if England are to proceed to the next round, should Hodgson sub Hart off?"

Why even talk at half time about a circumstance that may not happen? Surely that is only a conversation at the end of the game if they have made it through.

Or even better, they could have discussed Hart's performances so far before the game, queried whether he should still be number 1 and then carry on that conversation at half time. It didn't even need a reference to France in the quarter final, it could just have easily been discussed as Hart being number 1 in general.

The punditry is woeful but it isn't limited to just England. It is the unwillingness for most pundits to research outside their comfort zone when commentating on international tournaments. During Italy v Spain yesterday, commentator on the radio was harping on about Bellerin not playing, as he is clearly better than Juanfran, and that this was the issue with Spain most worth discussing...

Your average pundit or commentator surely has plenty time before a game to watch some highlights reels, read some articles and discuss with other football folk, to at least give the appearance that they are in part informed.

Bellerin is a very good player and will have a great chance of cementing a place as Spains right back in future years, but he was struggling to get a game on loan at Watford a few years ago. He is only in the squad as Carvajal is injured. Juanfran is class.

It's fake.

To be honest the Joe Hart thing wouldn't have surprised me, but soon as I saw the Kane comment :hysterical:

Yeah exactly, he is a good player, probably was one of the best full backs last season but Juanfran is most definitely in that starting 11 on merit. Also think after missing his decisive penalty in the final, a lesser player would have crumbled even going into another tournament but he has proved his mettle and played very well. Tbh Spain have no issues with their full-back positions in the next few years with Azpilicueta there too

this is rife in scotland among ex OF players. See Murdo McLeod or Chris Sutton as an example.
