Aberdeen sack Derek McInnes

Recommended Posts

I'm a bit meh about it. We have Hayes, Hedges, Kennedy, McLennan and McGinn all currently playing in (or capable of) playing in the positions GMS can. And all currently fit too. It's the one area of the pitch where really don't need cover. Perhaps DM is thinking medium term and it is highly likely that McGinn won't get a new contract. McLennan I suppose might not either but that would be very harsh.

Central defence is currently our biggest need. I want to see it dealt with as a priority. Then striker....especially if/when Cosgrove is sold. As it stands that would just leave Main, with both Watkins and Edmonston's loans ending. You would imagine we' d try to extend Watkins till summer but he's out till February at the earliest no matter what.

GMS just isn't a priority right now. I think we have to hold off for now and if we lose him to another side in the interim then so be it.

This - if we only sign one player in January it better be a replacement for Taylor

Could he not play as our striker too though, in the Watkins role?
Was he nae an actual striker at some point?

Think we used him there before as well.

Kennedy mcginn and mclennan are fucking shite though?

Kennedy has a good work rate for tracking back (but is a complete shite bag in tackles)

GMS instant upgrade

Aye right enough GMS was well known for his heart, bravery and tenacious tackling ?

Sometimes you've just got to go for players when they are available, regardless of priorities.  Hayes and McCrorie being recent examples of this.

If he went to Hibs and did well folk would be complaining that we didn't bring him in.

GMS would be a good signing. Sign him while he's available. McGinn is leaving in 5 months time.

Defence is a priority which is why I hope we sign Findlay and Gallagher on pre-season contracts if possible. Also get Hoban signed up for at least another year. Taylor will be given a 2 year deal.

Logan, Main, Ojo, McGinn, Cosgrove, Leigh and Devlin can all leave either this coming window or in the summer.

Then the trophy drought will continue

Not sure about the potential of GMS returning. Wasn’t sure in 2017 when he signed but was pleasantly surprised, by his goal return if nothing else.

Never really kicked a ball for us again after getting his head kicked in, in the Cup Final of 2018.

Is he the right type? Does he have the hunger, after lining his pockets stateside?

DM is a known admirer of Lewis Morgan, a younger and hungrier version, albeit he also lined his pockets in MLS. Noticed he was being linked with English clubs the other day.

GMS certainly wouldn’t fit into the wing back setup that we currently deploy, so would have to be as one of the two behind the main striker.

Just smacks of a lazy scouting setup to me. Surely there’s better out there?

It's only "lazy scouting" if the player wasn't actually good enough the first time around. The majority of players were key when they left us so if they are available why would we not go back for them?!

"Would rather find other players out there" is how we end up with fucking shite like Gleeson, Forrester, Zola, Hernandez etc.

Using that train of thought, we’d never have signed Ferguson, McRorie, Shinnie, Cosgrove etc etc.

But I can see where you are coming from, as with some of the other posters. If GMS was lining up against us, you’d recognise his as a threat. But look how easily Chris Cadden bullied him on the LC quarters?

How difficult would Hoban find it, up against him?

For what it’s worth, I think he’ll end up in the English lower leagues.

Taylor getting an extension might well happen. As long as he were to be 4th/5th choice (alongside Considine) I could live with it.....assuming we managed to persuade Hoban to sign a minimum 2 year deal when his loan finishes and we also signed Findlay and Gallagher to play alongside Hoban as the first choice back 3.

However I do wonder if we will go with only 4 specialist centre backs. We are looking to extend Leigh's loan till summer and I suspect if he stays fit once recovered from his current injury then he will join permanently too and be considered the emergency 5th centre back. In that instance then I'd want Taylor out and Hoban, Gallagher and Findlay in

I was specifically talking about the players that had come back, will it be lazy when we resign Shinnie again??

Our general transfer model should be taking the best scottish players for low fees/free from the lesser teams, like picking up your shinnies, fergusons, mcleans etc and selling on for a higher fee, then repeating. Or if we are taking players from England at least going safe with spl proven(rooney, goodwillie, mcgeough etc)

While we debate the 'is he/isn't he still good enough' issue, I think we're in danger of overlooking a key point here; why are we resigning ourselves to a repeat of the McGinn, Taylor and Hayes scenarios, whereby we bring back players who are past their best and are, at best, only giving us limited value from the law of diminishing returns?

What I'm getting at is why, for all the talk of the great new training facilities, the Atlanta partnership, coupled together with yearly European football and a reasonable chance of cup finals, are we not matching this with a better scouting network,.one that at least sees us looking at new, fresh acquisitions as opposed to sloppy seconds?

I’d argue Taylor’s an exception too.  Glaring hole in our defence, in fact we didn’t even have a defensive structure.  He was available.  We know his limitations.

GMS was a luxury player as was McGinn latterly.  Taking either back is/was a mistake.

Niall to bag a hat trick tonight to prove me wrong (hopefully)

I don't think it was ever expected that McGinn would return from South Korea quite as quickly as he did. In the end he only spent just over 5 months there, we didn't want to lose him before he left and Hibs (haha lost out to us again) were making serious overtures to sign him. The only problem to me was giving him 3 and a half years....2 and a half should have been it but maybe he would have went to Hibs had we not went the extra year.

Ive had time to think about GMS. Im now definitely in the "no thank you" camp
