She is partly responsible for the antisocial behaviour.

Rubbish!

Will people be blaming Blair for their ills in 20 years time?

Of course not and rightly so, what a bunch of lilly livered tossers todays lefties are, Maggie gave your lot both barrels and we became a better society because of it, no more strikes every week and the uneconomic cash guzzling industries were closed, tough shit! get over it, you got arse whipped, take it on the chin instead of wibbling about it years later.

Better society? Take a look around you, although I reckon your probably from a prosperous area and have parents who have "worked hard" for their comfortable lives. So you probably have no idea!

No strikes? Again take a look.

Uneconomic? Or non profitable? I think you will find that it gave jobs to thousands if not millions of people who then in turn spent their HARD EARNED money in the local communities they lived in creating further jobs and opportunities. When she closed down the pits she also closed down the butchers, bakers, pubs etc etc and increased the burden on the welfare state.

What a load of pish.

If mining was so profitable private companies would've invested in the industry and made a go of it. Do you think they would've missd an opportunity like that?

The mining industry may have gave jobs to thousands/millions of people as you say but everyone apart from the miners could see that the demand for coal was decreasing while at the same time to cost of mining the stuff was increasing. In the late 70s people were moving away from using coal fires and began using gas and electric as well as central heating. On top of that it was cheaper to import the stuff.

The miners only sped up the industry collapse by going on strike anyway. They thought that because they went on strike in 1974 and won a 35% pay increase from the then, newly elected labour government, that they could do the same to the Conservatives and Thatcher. They were wrong. Thatcher had been stockpiling coal because she expected the miners to pull the same shit they did in 74. She was proved right. They called her bluff and she destroyed them. The rest is history.

Sure she made some mistakes but defeating the miners union wasn't one of them.

and its labour we can blame for the joke of a welfare state we have now. they basically buy votes with benefits. wankers.

Began long before Labour got into power. They are just the cunts who did nothing to stop it.

Bottom line: All politicians are cunts.

The current social ills might just be the result of the Thatcherite concept of "Memememememe!"

You make greed a desirable state and you end up with a greedy, selfish society.

"Help the sick by paying taxes? Fuck 'em, they should work harder. Close more hospitals"

"Look after the mentally ill 7 days a week? Fuck em... boot them out on weekends and let them fend for themselves. We'll save more cash at their expense."

"Subsidise libraries? Who the fuck cares if poor people don't have access to books? Close them fuckers down."

"Coal mining communities? Steel communities? Fuck em. Community is for communists"

Too weak? Not smart enough? Not fit enough? Too old? Scottish? Poor?

Fuck all y'all, look how much cash we're accumulating.

Thatcher and Reagan typified the notion that greed was good and helping others was for suckers.

Not a particularly healthy mindset at all.

I never said it was profitable, they could have stopped importing it and invested in the PEOPLE, but oh no it's all about profit profit profit. What about quality of life for the workers? Areas now that are impoverished with a high rate of unemployment, high drug use, high crime rate, low life expectancy etc etc...... All because of Maggie! These were thriving communities she fucked over!

Christ i didn't know there were so many socialists in Aberdeen. What is wrong with businesses making a profit? It's not a bad thing.

Jobs created by the government do not create wealth. We need profitable businesses in the private sector to create jobs, which pay the wages which are taxed and this tax is used to pay the public sector jobs. Not the other way around. Do you think that if the oil industry was loss making it should be subsidised by the government?

The simple fact is the more you give someone for doing nothing the lazier they get. Giving more and more for less and less doesn't cure the problem. If you were to go into town now and pick a junkie off the street and offer him 2 grand a week for nothing do you think he would stop being a junkie bastard? No, he would just be a minted junkie bastard.

Nothing wrong with making a profit, problem is that profits are hoarded by the rich and not spread evenly, anyway that's another argument which I'm pretty sure you won't agree with.

Jobs created by the government provide wealth to the employees. As soon as you privatise something you just line the pockets of some fat cat and take yet more from the worker, be it wages, pensions, annual leave etc etc.

And your right the more you give someone the lazier they get.....and richer.

I agree that the wealth at the very top needs to be distributed more fairly. They can start by making sure there are no loopholes. you have a business so you pay the fair tax. Simple.

I cant agree with the part in bold though. Who pays for the government jobs. Where does the government get the money for these jobs?

Workers, public sector workers also pay taxes.

can someone please tell me why the closure of the pits was so bad.

surely if they were profitable they would have been reopened by now?

i have no allegiance when it comes to politics, i find political sideshows predictable and the whole thing overly competitive.

thatcher seems to split opinion more than any other politician ive ever seen and the haters especially only ever see her actions from their perspective, which encapsulates politics as a whole really i suppose. its hard to get a truely unbiased assesment of her time in govmnt.

The mines were flooded to ensure they could not be re-opened which tells you all you need to know.

well i dont know what the reason for that was but explains why they havent reopened then!!

its a good lesson for aberdeen to learn though. once the oil dries up or if companies move out and set up somewhere else, aberdeeen has to have something else up its sleeve or it'll end up like grim old yorkshire or south wales.

Mining communities were thriving areas with high employment opportunities and a good sense of community. Closing the pits made most people in these communities unemployed and this obviously has a knock on effect on the other businesses in the area, pubs, butchers etc etc. So you then go from an area of opportunity and employment to one with no opportunity and unemployment. Creating deprivation! And within areas of deprivation you have high unemployment, high crime rate, low life expectancy, high drug use and more.

So ok they weren't profitable in terms of making money(but they easily could have been turned around) but they had their benefits and it was short sighted to close them as it creates the problems we now see in these areas.

theres you answer then.

it doesnt matter if your maggie thatcher, churchill, ab lincoln or hitler, if its not profitable then any prime minister would close them. common sense.

that said it maye have a knock on effect but thats life. it'll happen to aberdeen one day.

if theres no employment in the area, then move to somewhere where there is.

Please explain the existence of the British nuclear industry to me, given your comments above

Doubt that there is anyone in British politics who has engendered more hatred towards her than Thatcher.

I don't remember folk waiting to have a party when Ted Heath died or Harold Wilson for that matter.

John Major is never seen as an enemy of the state.

Tony and Gordon have soiled their hands in a likely illegal war, but even they don't come in for the venom headed in Thatchers direction.

At the same time of course there are also those who will defend her with their lives, just none of them of course were in the Tory party when even they stabbed her in the back!

Nice debate regarding the social consequences and economic background to it all, but when all said and done she was a heartless cxnt.

Would imagine the demise of oil will hit aberdeen fairly badly as you say, there will be no goodwill be private oil companies when the profit margins start to slide

Aberdeen is going to be fucked when the crash comes.

Still, I'm sure that lovely golf course will come in handy.

I'd agree with that.

After decades of oil money passing through Aberdeen, what exactly has local government done to ensure the transition to another major industry when the black stuff dries up?

I see they've got plans for a bypass...
