USL is second and third tier to MLS' top tier.  USL Championship and USL Division One. 

Quality is probably somewhere between Highland League and Division One, depending on the team.

Mackie played in the USL with Phoenix, who were closer to Highland League standard. 

He scored -1 goals for them. That is minus one. Despite being brought in as their star striker. 

It was a terrific story of one pasty Scottish lad's battle against the odds, and his ultimate total failure in the face of those odds.
