From the Beeb:

As I've already explained, Italy have to win if they are stand any chance of making it through to the quarters. And even then, a 2-2 (or higher) draw over Gdansk means an Italian win would count for nothing.

Simon Stothard on Twitter: "Spain and Croatia draw 2-2 and Italy win 4-0. How wouldn't Italy qualify with better goal difference? Am I missing something?"

To answer your question Simon, hopefully as simply as possible, when teams are tied on points, initially the results involving those tied teams count to decide who qualifies. So basically, with the results you suggested, it becomes a "mini-league" withing the group featuring Spain, Italy and Croatia, all of whom would have five points. Italy's four goals against Ireland wouldn't count and so Croatia would go through courtesy of a better goal difference than Italy. I swear this vein on my temple has been getting bigger since Saturday

Goals in direct matches are considered. If Italy'll win against Eire it'll have 5 point like Spain and Croatia if they'll draw. At this point Italy made 1goal+1goal againt Spain+Croatia=2; if Croatia and Spain will draw 2-2 their count will be 1+2 (1 againt italy, 2 in this game)=3 so they will pass and italy should be out of tournament! (i am sorry for my poor english :( i hope you understood).

in my opinion italian journalists speak a lot of the "agreement draw" between Spain and Croatia, they take the italian victory against EIRE for granted. I belive Spain will win against Croatia but i am not sure about italian victory with EIRE so the passage of the round is the hands of italian team!

Trapattoni will probably be sacked in the morning regardless of the result tonight, so if he wants to enjoy his retirement in Italy, fully expect Ireland to be well beaten tonight,

Ha, that's the 3rd time the commentator has called David Silva 'David Villa' :poster_oops:

Hes having a mare... He also said that Cassano has scored twice as scored against Spain in first game... Also he might be right with this but why is he saying Italy qualify top if it stays like this?

Edit: Gary Linekar just explained it.. Confusing tho.

Just ignore all results involving Ireland if the other 3 teams are tied on 5 points.

Incidentally Di Natale scored v Spain. What is that commentator on? :nutso:
