Scotland manager Alex McLeish has moved quickly to name his first national squad, less than 24 hours after being appointed. He has called up 30 players to attend a team gathering in Ayrshire next week.

With no game attached to the gathering, there is the opportunity to include players who are currently injured as well as the three - Pressley, Fletcher and McFadden - who are suspended for Scotland's next Euro 2008 qualifier at home to Georgia on 24 March.

Allan McGregor of Rangers has been called into the A squad for the first time, and there are recalls for a number of players including Steven Caldwell, Kevin McNaughton, Richard Hughes, Ian Murray and Steven Thompson.

The team meet up on Sunday evening and will have two days together at Turnberry Hotel, with a series of training sessions and meetings to plan the way ahead.

been doing well by all accounts

I've only seen him play once since he moved, and he looked absolutely lost. I don't like to judge him on one game, but given the fact that he's a 'defender' who cant tackle, a 'wingback' who cant pass, and a 'winger' who cant cross, I can't see why any manager would rate him.

why hasn't JC tried to sign him then? Sounds like the perfect player for our total football ideal

He's signed a pre-contract with Rangers, since they both have massive issues with crosses, he should fit right in.

Thats maybe the 100th time that jokes been cracked this season, I should get a prize!

no attempt to lur gary o'connor back into the fold either, i see. poor show. he's clearly mair use than steven thompson.

He's said that O'Connor would need to apologise before he gets back into the squad.

Good call, my immediate impression of that squad was the fact that the frontline definetly lacked depth. Everyone makes mistakes, o'connor should definetly be recalled. Also waht about gary mcsheffrey? elidgible to play for us and ireland, what are the odds he goes to them instead

so pick up the phone and ask him to apologise. it's hardly middle east peace brokering negotiations we're talking about here. i'm sure the boy would bend over backwards to get back into the scotland set up so soon after his mistake.

I think it is somewhat churlish to criticise here. There is no game attached to this squad gathering and he has basically called in the current squad to meet the new management team. It's not the right place to be making a statement of intent.

As an aside I think including McNaughton is a good sign. Kev has been doing extremely well at Cardiff and is being seen as the bargain of the season in the Championship. I'm relatively indifferent on McGregor but he's done well enough this season.

Neil Alexander (Cardiff City) Never been conviced by him, no better than langfield

Paul Gallacher (Norwich City) if he's in the squad, why did Norwich sign David Marshall ? As Cover ?

Craig Gordon (Heart of Midlothian)

Allan McGregor (Rangers) good player , better than Marshall

Defenders

Graham Alexander (Preston North End) too old

Russell Anderson (Aberdeen)

Gary Caldwell (Celtic)

Steven Caldwell (Sunderland) a 1st div defender ?? No ta

Christian Dailly (West Ham United) barely gets a game these days, too old

Stephen McManus (Celtic)

Kevin McNaughton (Cardiff City) looks a bit lost in the championship

Graeme Murty (Reading) too old

Gary Naysmith (Everton)

Robbie Neilson (Heart of Midlothian) is he any better than Hart or Wilson

Steven Pressley (Celtic)

Andy Webster (Wigan Athletic/Rangers)

David Weir (Rangers) too old

Midfield

Barry Ferguson (Rangers)

Darren Fletcher (Manchester United)

Paul Hartley (Heart of Midlothian)

Richard Hughes (Portsmouth) not good enough for Pompey, not goo enough for Scotland

Lee McCulloch (Wigan Athletic)

Ian Murray (Rangers) I thought he was more of a full back

Nigel Quashie (West Ham United)

Scott Severin (Aberdeen)

Gary Teale (Derby County) why's he getting a game when Burke or Adam isn't

Forwards

Kris Boyd (Rangers)

James McFadden (Everton)

Kenny Miller (Celtic)

Steven Thompson (Cardiff City) Hardly banging them in, I'd prefer to see Naismith in there

Worrying that there's a lot of old guys in there , worrying that there's 4 goalies in there, worrying that there's only 4 forwards there, worrying he's picked 5 nominal right backs !!!!

WHO CARES WHAT THE SQUAD IS?

IT'S A TRAINING SESSION AND A CHANCE TO MEET SOME OF THEM WHO MAY OR MAY NOT PLAY A PART IN FUTURE GAMES.

BIG DEAL.

You sure about that? McNaughton is up there with Scimica and Chopra as Cardiff's player of the season

Someone must have worked wonders with him then, because he was mostly useless for us.

What about Brown, Kevin Thompson, Gow, Maloney, Riordan and Burke?

I think Brown and Thompson will be in his first match squad, if they arent, he's a mad man. In fact Whittaker should be in with a shout as well, he's a great player.
