Slim
http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/news.cfm?newsid=2647 Scotland manager Alex McLeish has moved quickly to name his first national squad, less than 24 hours after being appointed. He has called up 30 players to attend a team gathering in Ayrshire next week. With no game attached to the gathering, there is the opportunity to include players who are currently injured as well as the three - Pressley, Fletcher and McFadden - who are suspended for Scotland's next Euro 2008 qualifier at home to Georgia on 24 March. Allan McGregor of Rangers has been called into the A squad for the first time, and there are recalls for a number of players including Steven Caldwell, Kevin McNaughton, Richard Hughes, Ian Murray and Steven Thompson. The team meet up on Sunday evening and will have two days together at Turnberry Hotel, with a series of training sessions and meetings to plan the way ahead. Goalkeepers Neil Alexander (Cardiff City) Paul Gallacher (Norwich City) Craig Gordon (Heart of Midlothian) Allan McGregor (Rangers) Defenders Graham Alexander (Preston North End) Russell Anderson (Aberdeen) Gary Caldwell (Celtic) Steven Caldwell (Sunderland) Christian Dailly (West Ham United) Stephen McManus (Celtic) Kevin McNaughton (Cardiff City) Graeme Murty (Reading) Gary Naysmith (Everton) Robbie Neilson (Heart of Midlothian) Steven Pressley (Celtic) Andy Webster (Wigan Athletic/Rangers) David Weir (Rangers) Midfield Barry Ferguson (Rangers) Darren Fletcher (Manchester United) Paul Hartley (Heart of Midlothian) Richard Hughes (Portsmouth) Lee McCulloch (Wigan Athletic) Ian Murray (Rangers) Nigel Quashie (West Ham United) Scott Severin (Aberdeen) Gary Teale (Derby County) Forwards Kris Boyd (Rangers) James McFadden (Everton) Kenny Miller (Celtic) Steven Thompson (Cardiff City) Link to comment
chunk
http://www.scottishfa.co.uk/news.cfm?newsid=2647 I don't get it. If Langfield is the best Scottish goalie in Scotland, behind Craig Gordon, why is McGregor in this squad ahead of him? Link to comment

Guest El Padre
been doing well by all accounts I've only seen him play once since he moved, and he looked absolutely lost. I don't like to judge him on one game, but given the fact that he's a 'defender' who cant tackle, a 'wingback' who cant pass, and a 'winger' who cant cross, I can't see why any manager would rate him. Sounds like the perfect player for our total football ideal He's signed a pre-contract with Rangers, since they both have massive issues with crosses, he should fit right in. Thats maybe the 100th time that jokes been cracked this season, I should get a prize! Link to comment

Good call, my immediate impression of that squad was the fact that the frontline definetly lacked depth. Everyone makes mistakes, o'connor should definetly be recalled. Also waht about gary mcsheffrey? elidgible to play for us and ireland, what are the odds he goes to them instead Link to comment

Dandyjam
Was wondering how long before Steven Thompson was drafted back in. And don't think McGregor has done enough to earn a call up as yet, obviously called up because he plays for Rangers. It could easily be a Walter Smith squad if no one knew Eck was in charge now. Bobby Peru
He's said that O'Connor would need to apologise before he gets back into the squad. so pick up the phone and ask him to apologise. it's hardly middle east peace brokering negotiations we're talking about here. i'm sure the boy would bend over backwards to get back into the scotland set up so soon after his mistake. ZeroTolerance
I think it is somewhat churlish to criticise here. There is no game attached to this squad gathering and he has basically called in the current squad to meet the new management team. It's not the right place to be making a statement of intent. As an aside I think including McNaughton is a good sign. Kev has been doing extremely well at Cardiff and is being seen as the bargain of the season in the Championship. I'm relatively indifferent on McGregor but he's done well enough this season. Link to comment

As Cover ? Craig Gordon (Heart of Midlothian) Allan McGregor (Rangers) good player , better than Marshall Defenders Graham Alexander (Preston North End) too oldRussell Anderson (Aberdeen) Gary Caldwell (Celtic) Steven Caldwell (Sunderland) a 1st div defender ?? I think Brown and Thompson will be in his first match squad, if they arent, he's a mad man. In fact Whittaker should be in with a shout as well, he's a great player. Link to comment
