Especially when they're streaming it to Red TV international anyway.

Has any explanation been given?

Just because COVID isn’t shutting football down now, doesn’t mean the PPV can’t still be a success & a money maker.

There would’ve been a couple of thousand Dons fans out with the Aberdeen area, particularly the Central Belt, who might’ve been happy to fork out £10-£12 to watch the Dumbarton game via PPV for example.

That £20k would pay for 5 players wages for the week.

Scottish football really doesn’t help itself at times.

I agree, I liked the PPV. It's down to the broadcasters though. They agreed to let clubs run the PPV because of reduced attendances due to Covid. It was probably a push getting it as many games as we did last season as games were allowed full attendance at times. It's no surprise it's not going ahead now, but disappointing all the same. I don't think the clubs can take any blame in it not running though.

I suppose you can yes, as it's a part of the broadcasting deal, which we all know is pretty toilet.

I'd say this next part grudgingly, but if anything I'd say someone is due credit for getting the PPV approved in the first place.

I don’t get why it’s up to broadcasters and why they’re against it. They only pay for 40 out of 200 odd games a season. Once the broadcasters have their pick of games then the clubs should be allowed to do what they like from there.

Yip, plenty of us here. I don't go to many home games due to the travel and other things but go to a shit load of away games. Hibs, hearts, dundee, utd, motherwell, Hamilton, St Johnstone and killie all within 45 minute drive. PPV has been great for the home games for me and a lot others I know

Broadcaster get you to pay for a package which is consistent income ppv is a one off payment which isnt a business model that is good for them. Much prefer to get you to pay for 20 games and watch 5 of then than pay for the 5 you really want. if the clubs could stream ppv for the 5 the broadcasters business model fails. Where they have really messed up is they charge £100 for 20 games so people say £5 per game and expect PPV at £5 per game but you only watch 5 out of that 20 so they should charge £20 for ppv instead but they are too far along the model now to try that

If every game was available to punters at £12.99 per game on a pick and choose basis, do you think Sky Sports, BT sport, Premier Sport etc. would sell as many subscriptions? Unlikely. They buy the rights for X amount of games on the basis that they're the only place you can watch the games (whilst in mainland UK) other than actually going to the ground. Ofcourse they're not going to be happy if clubs start selling those games at £12.99 a hit

Is there anything legally or contractually stopping the SFA / SPFL setting up some sort of streaming / subscription service for the games that aren't being picked up by BT/Premier/Sky etc? Or is it just the cost of doing it?

I'm not sure about every single game but there is a "Blackout" for 3pm Saturday kick offs at least. Hence why all the televised games are Friday night, Saturday lunctime, Saturday evening etc.

Edit - or certainly this was always my belief anyway.

Is the issue not that Sky have paid for exclusive rights to all the games, therefore no one else can show the games without their permission?

We should consider selling our games in blocks next time like the EPL do.

It's exactly this.

This game however is the Premier Sports League Cup so they own the rights to League Cup games as opposed to Sky
