super_al
I am sure I read that Aberdeen had agreed a fee of around 800,000 for John Robertson, but signed Shearer instead. I think it’s in Miller autobiography. We were linked with David Rocastle (spelling) in the mid 1990’s. The one that gets me is Christophe Cocard – Ebbe wanted him on trail he refused and signed for Killie. Then scores on his debut against us! Emeka Andersen - Bronby goalkeeper who played in the Champions League. Apprantly he wanted too much money. Ebbe had agreed a fee with Rangers for our now current manager. Deal fell through over personal terms. Edit: There was a cracking player Jimmy tried to sign - Delaboom (spelling) he went on to have a good career in Holland. Link to comment
ericblack4boss
i certainly recall ebbe trying to bring HUN DMC as a player, and also recall the John Robertson deal as good as done before we got shearer, was it not becasue we thought we could,nt get Shearer so Robertson was the original choice have to say Robertson would have been a good signing proven goalscorer. I was always led to believe the that the McCoist deal had been agrred between the clubs (£800,000) McCoist travelled all the way up to Aberdeen withy no intention of signing he just went through the motions to piss Souness off. redtillidie
Slightly different slant on those mentioned, Jim McInally in the mid 90's had already been paraded as a new signing but as part of the deal, Peter Hetherston was going back to Raith and failed the medical and deal was called off and we were stuck with useless bastard Silky. Hetherston- by far and away one of the worst players I've ever had the mispleasure of seeing in an Aberdeen Shirt- must have been related to Kerr n McDonald somehow along the way...... WillemVan
We were linked with Darren Anderton for a while when he was at Portsmouth. Would have been a fantastic signing but for whatever reason it never came off and he went to Spurs. Link to comment
WillemVan
Rab McKinnon of Motherwell is another one that seemed to drag on forever Link to comment
super_al
Casper from Reading - around the year 2000, we were linked with him for a 1 milllion move........ Link to comment
dervish
No, the biggest 'miss' by AFC is surely Dennis Law? Also, we should have signed Shaun Maloney (too small apparently). Myth, was a total tim from birth. Gary Mackay-Steven. Was with us for 5 years as yoof sent down loads of times for trials not taken on, went to Ross County sold to Liverpool for £100k who would have paid more if they had to. Then even had a second chance when he went to Scum Dee. Link to comment
Iraq_Red
Were we not poised to sign Ralph Milne from Dundee Utd but Fergie stepped in and signed him for Man Utd?> Apparently it was to piss off the then board, as because Fergie wanted first refusal on Joe Miller but we then went and sold him to Celtic and this is what pissed him off Link to comment
ericblack4boss
think we dodged a bullet on the Ralph Milne one , no doubting the man was a terrific player but by the time Man U signed him his demons had taken over and he was washed up such a pity back in the early 80s Milne, Ritchie would have walked in to any side in europe befoer the got ravaged by drink. Cowie
Ferrie Bode is one that we should have had... 50k I think was the stalling point ( & this was just after we had sold Anderson) He looked very good at Swansea prior to his injury (s). Getting him in for midfield definitely would have been building on the 3rd place finish in 2007. AFC could have probably made some cash on him aswell. Link to comment
caledonia
Stuart Baxter could have been manager every time one gets sacked or leaves Link to comment
caledonia
We might also have got fergie back if he did not win that first cup with UTD Link to comment
ericblack4boss
Herats came very close to getting fergie just before he won that first FA cup, he was very nearly tempted after Wallace Mercer offered him a substantial transfer budget, a home worth £200,000 within half an hour of Tyncecastle and other inducements i read that in a book recently Ferguson agonised over the offer for over aweek before he turned it down and hearts appointed Joe Jordan instead, Link to comment

Ke1t
Wigan bid about 2 mil a year or 2 later fo him. Ferrie Bodde was indicative of how penny pinching turned us into a trophieless, bottom 3 club. There's cost-saving, and then there's running the club with a pub team mentality... and we've had the pub team mentality for a long time now. The fact we've had a piss poor eye for a player for the same length of time has compounded that. Just think, we paid 100 grand for Tommy Wright, whose level is somewhere around the English Conference. That's 2 Ferrie Boddes. We refused to pay 50k for Bodde who by all accounts is a good quality player. Although we would almost certainly have played Bodde out of position, meaning he became disillusioned, stopped trying, and eventually left for fuck all or, worse, been paid to leave a'la Hughes/Bisconte I'm starting to identify just what it is that's wrong with the club. Everyone at the club is shite at their job. The board is incapable of getting investment, or funding. The Chairman... a fucking housebuilder... can't even figure out how to buy the land at Cove for his 'planned' white elephant stadium. Seriously? The management has been a never-ending procession of guys who are absolutely pish at management. A slight problem when your job is, in fact, management. The scouting network... there is no scouting network. And those players we bring in are, far more often than not, fucking hopeless. The first team coaches are completely incapable of developing the talent that comes through from the youth team, a youth team that is the one bright spot in the club these days. Anyway, fuck it, I'm awa to buy a new grill and cook some horsemeat. ...and get drunk. .......maybe not in that order. Link to comment
The Oxford Don
For once , I do have some inside info ..........about Cameron , from a Raith Rovers fan who was well in wi' the directors there Apparently the reason he didn't sign for us was simply because Hearts made him a better offer. Nothing more dramatic thann that , I'm afraid And I think McCoist was close to signing for us ....no inside info on this one, I just mind reading aboot it somewhere ......the old Donstalk site maybe ?...so it must have been right enoughWhen McCoist had his massive fallout with Souness (about 1991 I think) we were indeed briefly linked with him. I think we were going to stick in a bid of around £1m to test the water. It was quite a big story, for all of about two minutes, until everyone realised it was nonsense and Souness got fired anyway. Would have been very interesting for all concerned if that one had actually come off! Link to comment
super_al
Not dons related but it has to be the best story of a missed opportunity - 1978, Shef Utd agreed a fee for Maradonna..........board though could not release the funds. Link to comment

Holyjoe
Patrice Loko was someone Ebbe was looking at, I seem to remember Loko had an Icons.com (or similar) website at the time where he was commenting on how Aberdeen had been in contact with him and how keen he was to join. That one didn't come off for some reason. Link to comment

ericblack4boss
on a slightly different not i distinctly recall ( in fact i made apoint of remembering it because it was the fucking OAF spouting it) that when Aluko first arrived on load from Birminghmam. the OAF was asked about him and he said he had "never seen him playing" the deal was done by Miller and Eric Black who was assistant at St Andrews at the time, did'nt take long for Jimmy to take the credit though did it?
