From everything I'm reading the BUK is a multi-system platform, using anywhere from two to four vehicles working in concert. It's not like the Stingers the CIA handed over to the Tallies in Afghanistan. You don't just hoy a BUK onto your shoulder, point it at a plane, and pull a trigger.

 

So whoever fired this thing was trained in the operation of a modern anti-aircraft battery. This rules out local separatists with hunting rifles, pretty much rules out most ex-military locals, and rules out even most current military. You don't train grunts how to use these things. This is a team of soldiers who have trained on the equipment in order to use it so effectively that they can co-ordinate the destruction of a jet at 30,000 feet.

 

The idea that a gang of half-pished Cossacks at a road-block just happened to have one of these systems lying around, and were able to use it to take out an airliner...? Does that sound plausible?

 

If I was already suspicious of the 'intercepted admission of guilt' that the Ukranians released then I'm twice as suspicious now.
