DETROIT — Less than 16 months after Detroit became the largest city in the United States to file for bankruptcy, a federal judge on Friday approved a plan intended to help it escape years of financial ruin and begin the hard work of becoming viable again.

“What happened in Detroit must never happen again,” Judge Steven W. Rhodes of United States Bankruptcy Court in Detroit said as he approved a plan for the city to rid itself of $7 billion in debt and to invest about $1.7 billion into long-neglected city services. “This must never be repeated anywhere in this state.”

The decision came with remarkable speed and with far less discord than many had foreseen given the size of the city and the complexity and depth of its financial woes.

The ruling marks an end to one chapter for Detroit, which, when the case began, had accumulated roughly $18 billion of debt and was wrestling with annual budget deficits, miserable city services and a nonstop exodus of residents and investment dollars. The exit plan sets aside $1.7 billion over a decade to remove blighted buildings, to buy fire trucks and ambulances, and to upgrade the city’s antiquated computer systems.

Even as Detroit was going through bankruptcy, city officials were racing to improve dismal services in a place where 40 percent of streetlights had been out, the average police response time was almost an hour, and 30 percent of buildings were dilapidated or headed that way. Kevyn D. Orr, the appointed emergency manager here since March 2013, said Detroit had improved “significantly” in a year: 1,000 new streetlights were being installed each week, police response times and clearance rates had improved, and hundreds of blighted buildings were being torn down.

hopefully this spells the start of a turnaround in Detroit's fortunes :crossfingers:

Lulz... I'll put cash money bucks American on this happening again. What's left in Detroit at this point is the hard core of crazies, lazies, and gang members who quite enjoy having entire derelict city-blocks as their own personal kingdom.

Every time I'm down there there's some sort of insanity being played out by the locals that would get normal people stuck in a straitjacket and packed off to Arkham Asylum quicker than you can say, "I'm Batman."

Was just reading a story about some naked dude wandering around Detroit last month, pack of semi-feral Pit Bulls see this lad, attack him, and chew off his hands and feet. Ambulance crews couldn't get out of their vehicles to help the guy because the dogs then tried to eat them inna. The cops showed up and just started blasting the mutts to death in a murderous frenzy of blue-uniformed mayhem.

This particular craziness made like page 20 of the Detroit Free Press because, you know, it's hardly newsworthy, right?

On the upside, property is cheap in Detrot. For a mere 1500 American bucks you can be the proud owner of your own home, complete with bars on every window. This will very slightly mitigate, but in no way eliminate, the near certainty that someone will break in and rob, rape, and murder you in the first couple of months of residence. But for 1500 bucks American how can you pass up the chance of home ownership and a trip to the Emergency Room/Morgue?

Its like The Walking Dead, but only worse

Well, a Zombie isn't going to shoot at your car from an overpass, so I guess it's like The Walking Dead if the Zombies were also armed.

On another positive note, because I do like to be positive about the Motor City, it's estimated that there are around 100 serial rapists in the city, so that's one serial rapist for every 7000 residents. Or 1 for every 3500 women... so any females coming to the D can be pretty sure that any lengthy stay will probably see them raped. Stay 10 years and statistically a woman WILL be raped by one of the serial rapists. Though, to be fair, they'll probably already have been raped multiple times by non-serial rapists long before one of the career rapists get to raping them. Anyway, I guess my point is that if you want a good, professional raping then Detroit is probably where you want to go.

Also... 50,000 feral stray dogs. What other city can boast such a massive population of wild, savage dogs?

Hopefully the Fermi nuclear plant goes into meltdown at some point in the near future, then we'll really get the full Fallout 3, Post-Apocalyptic, Mutants-Eating-Your-Face experience. Who wouldn't want to come and LARP a little Fallout 3 for a couple of weeks?

Come To Detroit and be Savaged by a Pack of Feral Dogs

Come to Detroit and Get Properly Raped

Do you ever think of getting out of there kelt and why did you pick there in the first place

I could say it's the cash... I could say it's the multitude of lakes where you can swim, boat, jetski and fish... I could maybe even say it's the dense, primal forests with bears, wolves, cougars, and an abundance of other wildlife.

I think the real reason, though, is that I'm just fucking stupid.

To be fair, Detroit is just a small part of Michigan... and the depopulation of the state means property everywhere, even up in the far north of the state where you can have lakefront property with a couple of acres of land, will cost you less than the price of one of Stewarty Milne's fashionable, yet miniscule, 1 bedroom Lego flats.

I don't live in Detroit, though... can't stress that enough.

To clarify... Here's Detroit.

Here's a non-Detroit suburb/city

And here's 'Up North'

It's a beautiful place so long as you don't have to live in Detroit.

So basically the sensible sorts left the city to suburbia/neighbouring cities which left Detroit to the gangs/dogs. Crikey, sounds like fucking Mogadishu.

Pretty much that.

It was called 'White Flight', with the white folks starting to leave the city as the black population grew. Then the riots started, where black folks burned down huge swathes of the city (which has never been rebuilt) and the white evacuation of the city went into full swing.

When the auto industry went into meltdown so did Detroit.

And here's the interesting thing... with Detroit utterly fucked, I mean fucked like you wouldn't believe, the residents of Detroit are now forced to travel to the white suburbs if they want to go shopping, swim at a public pool, or even visit a park safely. So even white folks fleeing to get away from the blacks hasn't kept them separate. The black folks are just following the whites into the burbs to use the facilities because their own has been shut down/burned down/taken over by gangs. There's nothing quite like fucking your own neighbourhood up then heading to the burbs to trash their shit too.

There are two distinct cultures here, White and Black... and they're very, very different.

When I first moved here me and the wife would go to bars and restaurants in Detroit, but one night we were headed to a club and couldn't get in because they were in the process of wheeling some of the patrons out on trolleys because there had been a shooting. After that we tended to not head downtown at night so much. Now you probably wouldn't go to much of the place even during the day. Even the cops avoid certain areas.

From 2,000,000 residents to around 700,000, that's about a 2/3 depopulation... you can stop your car in a residential or commercial neighbourhood and be the only person in sight. It's genuinely like the end of the world in places.

So do the folk that live up North commute to some kind of still existing Detroit CBD, or is everyone working remotely? Where are those wankers off the PAwn programme? I'd like to twat that son right in the scone.

Troy and Southfield are the two big commercial districts, so most people can go to and from work along 696 without ever having to hit Detroit. A lot of people are working remotely, though. I go to clients about once or twice a week now for a couple hours in the mornings, doing pretty much everything remotely or on the phone. The company I 1099 for hired a dude to do most of the on-sites, half of which are in and around Detroit, so he's now working at clients and I get to bum around in my jammies doing 90% of my shit from home. The wife does most of her stuff remotely too. she's involved in anti-terrorism shit, which is hilarious... she got a medal thing/award from Homeland Security a couple of years ago. :hysterical: So, if you plan on launching a chemical attack, or sniping at government officials/police/military, her team is the one responsible for killing you. Mrs Kelt... keeping America safe from Arabs. The irony isn't lost :)

That Pawn place is over on Greenfield and 8 Mile. Only time I'm over there is when I'm buying drugs or sizing up a hooker. It's not worth going down to 8 Mile unless you're looking to buy drugs or a fuck a fat, African American prostitute. You maybe saw 8 Mile in the movie 8 Mile, featuring the popular white rapper, Eminem. Absolute shithole. They have motels on 8 Mil;e where you can rent rooms by the hour and rent toys.

You think about that... you can rent toys in hourly rate motels. Their entire business model revolves around serving the hooker community, or renting out rooms where you can do your drug deals.

...rent a room for two hours, and, yes, could I also rent that sticky dildo with the pubes all over it? 15 Buck American? Why thankyouverymuch.

Those motels sound like a sniffers paradise. Poodles, funcy a holiday?

I like the idea of working from home - and a large pad that was cheap to buy and service sounds good too. I just need to tailor my job to make it possible.

Steal enough stock through the night shift and set up from home.

Easy. How you getting on with those PIR switches?

I told you. Help yersel.

I wasn't thinking about settingup a DIY store fae home, I need to manipulate my job a bit further than that.

Are you still in Dubai, or what you doing up at this time?

Still in Dubai. Well Sharjah to be precise. Office in Sharjah, hotel in Dubai. Travel back and fore each day. Weekend starts today.

Fit like Kelt.

Just reading an article which summarises the "most violent States in the US of A" and quite surprised to see that Michigan ain't even in the top ten.

After following your tales of lovely Downtown Detroit, I expected Michigan to to up there.

I guess the nicer areas of Michigan have hauled the mean (pardon the pun) up.

For the record Washington DC is top of the pop parade.

For the record

Washington DC is top of the pop parade.

But if you searched for most violent city in America -

Detroit. The Motor City tops the list of America's Most Dangerous Cities for the fourth straight year thanks to a stubborn problem mostly with gang-related violence. Violent crimes -- murder, rape, robbery and assault -- fell 10% last year but are still running five times the national average.

Detroit, the city, has just been awarded the title 'America's Most Dangerous City' for the second year in a row. Oakland in California, where all the violent Hispanic and NAZI gangs do their thing, is currently second.

Michigan, the State, is a beautiful place, with plenty cash if you happen to be white and educated. If you're black and stupid... as most people in Detroit are... then you're kind of fucked.

It's an experience walking around Detroit, even the 'safe' areas where there are cops and streetlights such as Greektown, you'll still get black guys coming up panhandling or trying to intimidate you into handing over cash. I usually tell them to get fucked with a cheerful smile on my face. I've never had anyone get aggressive with me, but I'm confident I could batter fuck out of any brother who felt like helping himself to my wallet. The wife has had a gun pointed at her face in Cass Corridor, which is now called 'Midtown' I think, because they reckon it sounds less sinister. She was probably mouthing off at some black fella and was lucky to get away without having her head turned into a Polo Mint.

Her grandfather worked in Detroit, and he was held at gunpoint I think on four separate occasions, so he was understandably not a big fan of the darkies. Some people have earned the right to be racist, and her grandfather more than earned his racism in my opinion.

I've had Brothers come up asking for cash as I leave offices, sporting events, festivals, and gigs... I might give them a buck or two if I'm not in the mood to be bothered. If I'm pissed off or in 'serious' mode they'll be telt to fuck off. No-one's pulled a gun on me yet, and I've no idea how I'll react if or when it happens. Might pish myself, equally I might crack them in the face for their cheek. It'll be interesting to see how that works out for me :)

Most of the violence is confined to Detroit and Flint, though... which is why the State as a whole is fine, but if you're anywhere within the limits of those two cities then you better either be carrying a gun or be able to look after yourself in the event someone decides to rop, rape, or murder you.

i got handed a flower and serenaded for a few blocks while walking through Greektown last summer.

maybe you need to just smile nicer, Kelt?

:)

Greektown is one of the safer areas. The Casino is there, so it's in the interests of the local government to keep the streets around The Grand relatively safe. You should have tried walking a few blocks away from Greektown, just to see what kind of thing you get stuck in your hand in the places with no street lights. Probably not going to be a rose ;)

It used to be a lot nicer, though... recently its started to shutter some of the bars and restaurants. Fishbones turned off the waterfall, and even on a Saturday the place is more or less deserted.

I'd recommend any visitors to the city stick within a block or two of the Casino, though.

i stayed within about an eight city block radius of Greektown. wandered to the waterfront in the morning for a walk. i did avoid the obvious side streets though. and didn't stay out that late. it's a shame. cos they've really tried to keep that area all cleaned up. and what it needs is more people. just decent people.
