Aberdeen sack Derek McInnes

Currently there are no managers operating in the SPL (including The Rangers or Celtic) that could do a better job then McInnes at Aberdeen. You cannot excuse the injuries we currently have. They have most definitely affected our recent performances. The majority of players will return from injury in the forthcoming weeks. If we are still underperforming once he has a fully fit squad to pick from then we can point the blame at McInnes.

 

Last season, we were hit by injuries just as badly: Delvin, McKenna, Logan, Lewis, Wilson, GMS, Hoban, Gleeson etc were out for 3 plus months each and Chris Forrester was clearly suffering from personal issues which didn't help - thats why we didn't finish above Killie. Too many injuries.

 

This season has so far been a repeat of last season - more injuries. McInnes may be a fault for signing injury prone players but unfortunately in order for us to sign a certain standard of player we resort to crocked players. Clearly the same applies to Hearts as well. Things have gone stale there is no denying that and the quality of football (again due to injures) is atrocious but we will improve once the players return.

 

I'd like to add that The Scotsman and Daily Record along with Simon Ferry, Kevin Kyle and Paul Slane aren't exactly fond of Aberdeen. The Scotsman has jumped all over this sack McInnes bandwagon because Aberdeen have been outperforming the Edinburgh clubs for several years now. They are desperate to see the back of McInnes. Theres only two managers who I think could do an equal to better job under the current circumstances. Steve Clarke and potentially Jack Ross. We'd fall down the league in dramatic fashion if McInnes were to leave. Just like when Hayes, McGinn, McLean, Jack and Shinnie all left everyone said they were pish and we wouldn't miss them. 3 months later we are all desperate for them to return. I truly hope McInnes proves all the doubters wrong.

Aye, I'm amazed there aren't any employers out there willing to hand out a hefty six figure salary for a man whose main attributes are negativity, stubbornness, making excuses for his mistakes and poor recruitment. Not exactly FTSE 100 material.

Gallagher, Hedges, Main, Leigh and Vyner are all fit. It has been a bit of a freak start to the season and maybe players like Bryson and Ojo having to start the season earlier than normal and play competitive games earlier than expected has taking a toll on them. The clubs staff should be looking at this and addressing this in the future. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of rotation like the old firm who do it on a regular basis to avoid injuries. 

 

On paper the recruitment has been decent in comparison to every other club outside the old firm. We've held on to Lewis, Ferguson, McKenna and Cosgrove. 

 

Something else is not right within the camp. The tactics are shocking and certain players look uninterested. Even when we had a fully fit squad we looked poor away at Dundee, Killie, St Mirren etc. A couple of decent home performances against Hearts and County papered over the cracks. 

 

Saturday is a huge match for all concerned going in to the international break. If we win we will look in not too bad shape considering our poor form and we will look to kick on. If we lose or draw then the knives will be out and our next two fixtures are very tough away to Motherwell and home to the Tims. 

 

Even through some of McInnes bad times I always felt that he could get us back on a run of 6 or 7 wins on the bounce. This season I don't have that confidence and he needs a real shake.

Apart from the centre of defence (and even then I'm probably only really talking about Vyner), our starting 11 were all players I think are you'd probably expect to start plenty of games for us even when everyone is fit. I'd maybe exclude Campbell from this, maybe as although he's getting quite a lot of game time we shouldn't forget how young he is, but the team was fine on Saturday on paper (very rare any team is full strength), it's just everyone seems out of form, low on confidence, not being played to their strengths and so on. I don't think we can blame injuries for Saturday's scoreline, other than pointing to the bench where we definitely were short of senior first team players admittedly. But the damage was done long before the hour mark when managers would usually first consider substitutions anyway.

I don't agree that a manager can't be motivated because his team have no chance of wining the league. Every single league in Europe has only ~2-4 sides that will realistically win their respective leagues. There's no way that every other manager isn't motivated to push their side in those leagues, despite knowing that they've no chance of competing. There's 36 games in the season and they are motivated each week to go out and win, or at least that's what a proper manager does. McInnes this season looks to be going out in most of these games to ensure the team doesn't lose first of all, which is completely backwards against sides like St Mirren.

We MIGHT be the third best side in the country given a full squad to select from. The evidence so far most certainly points to us not being the third best side given a continued run of injuries like we have suffered since the season started. Wright out for he season. Ojo likely out till the January break. McKenna and Devlin picking up injuries  that frequently keep them out for anywhere between a month and 3 months at a time. Right now it seems just as we get one player back to fitness, another cops an injury to replace him in the physio's room. It could just be bad luck. But it could be  to do with signing a number of players with historical injury problems. 

 

Whatever....right now we are in a decline. McInnes needs to halt it and fast.

What Russell Anderson is very true in the context of the shite teams he played in, from his debut in 1997 to, say, 2004, and the plethora of incapable and meek managers he played under in that period, in comparison to the position we have been in under Derek McInnes since 2013-14, his first full season in charge.

Fine change from the “unreasonable expectations” pish we’re usually getting

It does feel like we’ve fallen off a cliff edge following the promising start to the season. I just wonder if the rumoured departure of Mckenna and the Fraser transfer bonus having both come to nothing meant a re-evaluation of our signing targets. Only Vyner was brought in following the closure of the EPL window and its unlikely we’ll have much more to play with in the January window either. Maybe Derek expected to have a bigger budget to play with? The constant disruption due to injuries means we can’t get a settled squad to gel with one another, the back line especially needs to be consistent in terms of personnel to build an understanding. Quality is arguably an issue but I think most in our first team have shown evidence of ability. Very few have managed to maintain a high standard. The fact that Considine is probably our stand out performer so far is enough to set alarm bells ringing.

It is strange despite a fairly steady tenure as Dons boss he’s not been approached by clubs down south. At least not publicly since the Sunderland debacle. Other Scot’s managers have achieved less but been linked/appointed. Winning trophies is what gets you noticed though and it’s been a barren 5 years and counting.

 

Alex Neil won nothing as Hamilton manager and he got a decent gig down South.

Clarke won nothing with Killie and he's been getting plaudits all over the country and now managing the National Side.

 

Derek McInnes plays eye bleeding football, with the same tactics week in, week out despite it not working. THAT'S the reason he's not being on any clubs short list anymore.

I've just had a look at Petrescu manager stats, he won the Romanian league with Unirea Urziceni ( a town about the size of Inverurie) and got them into the CL. He was manager when they hammered the huns 4-1 at Ibrox.

He's probably achieved more in management than the majority of managers that we have employed in the last 30 years.
