The DD stand fkd our playing budget for well over a decade

RDS was built during 92/93 season.

The transfers in the following years included :-

1994 Ray McKinnon £300K

1995 Paul Bernard £1million

1996 Kiriakov £400K

1996 Tzvetanov £600K

1996 Kombouare £400K

1997 Brian O’Neill £850K

1997 Ricky Gillies £460K

1998 Robbie Winters £700K (plus Billy Dodds)

1999 Zerouali £450K

1999 Jim Hamilton £300K

We also signed John Inglis and Peter Hetherston in 1994. Haven’t found details of the transfer fees we paid , but £500K rings a bell for Inglis and £250K for Hetherston.

I’m sure I’ve read that the RDS has generated enough income over the years from increased corporate sponsorship to have pretty much covered its own costs.

But it clearly didn’t fuck up our playing budget

I'm sure Hetherston cost £100k

Jeez , that’s a sobering list. Not the players but the cost... we can only dream about spending 500k on a player these days... no wonder we were 15 million in debt

From memory most of those numbers are on the high side. Although you did miss Nigel Pepper £400K

Those transfers were funded by a share issue around 1995 where fans bought around £3million worth of shares, in the same period there were the sale of Jess to Coventry and Wright to the dead club, which brought in around £4million.

The RDS was not a good project for the club, either in execution or long term use, even on a good day its half empty, and worst of all its too close to the pitch.

Good point, so maybe the RDS wasn't quite such a burden after all.

Although not sure it proves it didn't fuck up our playing budget as a lot of the spend above incurred debts we just couldn't pay down - we really shouldn't have been buying all these guys.

Either way, for the moment I'm given a bit of optimism about the stadium funding by Cormack and Crotty and hopefully they will put more money in as well as find other partners to invest. Ideally when they do Milne's hand is forced and he has to match whatever Cormack or Crotty puts in - if he doesn't pay his share I think he may be under a lot of pressure to release the control of the club.

Cormack is not as rich as some folk think.

Factor £800,000 for Billy Dodds in 1994 from St. Johnstone (pretty sure John Inglis was circa. £350k) and there was not much return for the monies spent by Willie Miller (in his last year in charge) and Roy Aitken. All things considered, we did bloody well remaining in the league, considering done of the mercenaries and imposters we signed.

I thought Jess returned after coventry failed to pay the transfer fee. And instead we got jess back

You may be right min but I thought we got him for a fraction of the fee that Coventry promised to pay. Gary Smith returned around the same time from Rennes but I don't think a fee was involved.

If we have a huge loan/mortgage on it then yes.

I may be delusional but I think we might actually do it without too big a mortgage for the club. I'm positive on that.

Biggest challenge is getting the stadium and transport right for fans and making sure the backing is there from us to make it work.

hope so

+1 that kind of counters the completely one sided view posted earlier that everyone seemed to take as gospel, denying that the DD cost the club a fortune & contributed vastly to our debts we struggled to cope with for decades.

The DD was built during a time when all clubs were massively over spending.

To blame our debts on just buying players & completely discounting the selling of players is totally one sided.

See above. Whilst I am sure you went to a lot of effort to research all that.

It is a completely one sided view & in complete denial of the massive costs of the DD. A stand that was said by many that even its namesake would have been against

Link to comment

The problem with the DD was always the lack of long term vision (ironically - absolutely agree with the shite view in the RDU comment).

The DD was fine if the intention was to build another 3 the same on site. Even then that was never the case. Yes it paid itself short term because of the increased commercial operations but long term it was always just going to be a deadweight.

And it took little heed of changing football politics in Scotland and further afield.

Didn’t take much effort. I remembered most of the players and it was just a case of looking up their Wikipedia page or the transfer market website. And this article that came up from a simple Google search

https://www.eveningexpress.co.uk/fp/aberdeen-fc/five-dons-deals-failed1/

If it’s one sided then that’s because I was focusing solely on dismantling and rubbishing your claim that the RDS fucked our playing budget for a decade. Mission accomplished.

I wasn’t denying the costs of the RDS because I didn’t know how much it cost. Not a fuckin clue on that score, much like yourself , I suspect.

And as for your comment that Dick Donald would have been against the stand being built ...... he was still the Chairman when the decision was made to build it.
