Redeveloping Pittodrie - Options

Sure I read that for safe standing, you need to drill 600mm into the concrete to install the rods that support the rail seating, and the Merkie terracing is nowhere near that depth. Suspect neither is the SS terracing.

Everybody stands already. No drill required.

Looks smart as fuck, but I suspect is totally unrealistic.

It's presuming first of all that the Red Shed and the main stand can somehow be brought up to the height of the south stand, on exactly the same footprint.

I just don't see how that can be done, sadly.

When you look at both the SS and the Merkie, the terracing is very “shallow” and with there being plenty depth in both those stand footprints, you’d think building steep 2 tier replacements would be a caker. The main stand would be a different kettle of fish but Hibs managed to squeeze in a single storey stand for their final piece of the stadium jigsaw.
And the Cooncil can fcuk off with their height restrictions as they allowed them Merkland Rd apartments

It's just part of Pittodrie and something that makes it unique.

There are loads of iconic footage of great goals being scored from that corner over the years.

Too many people want soulless shiny symmetrical lego stadiums that look great on an aerial shot when watching via a stream on their 100 inch TV.

A lot of the folk that moan about Pittodrie and pine for a new stadium have no intention of ever setting foot in it and rarely if ever even go to the current one.

Kids and benders that concern themselves with a shiny stadium. Who gives a fuck if the team are winning.

would love that , biggest problem is , where does everyone go while that is getting built

Do one end at a time, and finish off with the main stand? How much does each stand hold, would it mean a huge drop in capacity to do this?

Could create hospitality and catering in each part of the ground, therefore ensuring corporate income as it's developed

Btw if your thinking 'major' changes then forget that, this is keep the stadium at a decent standard for 10years changes, not redevelopment......

Yeah I was thinking it’ll be more a lick of paint, a few new seats and install couple of extra bogs.

Get some pikeys to power wash the moss of the roofs.

They are just kicking the can down the road, building a new stadium will never get cheaper and as a result will never happen

Quite simply because it's a fucking eyesore with dreadful facilities for fans. Pittodrie is shit. Yes it's our home and it holds many wonderful memories and brilliant times but it's long past it's sell by date.

Nonsense.

Try name a stadium anywhere in the world that is better than the old girl.

You can’t, because it doesn’t exist.

The major problem is of course that the club have never, ever had any plan other than selling the land that Pittodrie is on, and re-locating.

We've never seriously considered the option of effectively knocking Pittodrie down and starting again.

And now that the land is worth nothing more than 10 bob and a handful of magic beans, our options have become limited.

In short, we're simply going to keep on putting sticking plasters over the cracks, and hope that it becomes someone elses problem in the future, when most of us are dead.

'Aberdeen FC have shelved plans on a new stadium and are pushing ahead to modernize Pittodrie instead'

A spokesman for the club has today stated that the following upgrades are essential if we are to take the clubs ground into at least a 20th century stadium. The below upgrades will commence after our last home game, and hope to be in place for the start of the 25/26 season.

1 - All toilets in the ground will be re-tiled

2 - Upon completion of re-tiling,  all lavvy pots will be fitted with a toilet duck air freshener (Air fresheners will be renewed biannually)

3 - All stainless steel urns in the kiosks will be upgraded to hold at least of 5 liters of boiling water for each game.

4 - The asbestos ridden main stand roof will undergo a severe power wash.

5 - The broken perspex bit at the side of the RDS that has been in a state of disrepair for well over 10 years will be replaced with chipboard.

Sounds terrible, the club should be investing those millions in more tifo, a Fuck The Huns banner and making Nisbet’s loan a permanent deal.

I go every home game and want a new stadium because Pittodrie is dreadful. Killed by the RDS, its stupid design and height and open corners. All the noise seems to escape out there and section Y. It's not an old stadium with a cracking atmosphere, a pub on every corner and bustling streets that could never be replaced, like the likes of Brentford. Comes alive for hun games but so would anything.

New stadiums don't need to be shiny and soulless either. Look at Union Berlin's stadium.

Union Berlins stadium originates in 1920 and has been renovated a few times with a new Main Stand the one stand with seating and rest is now upgraded concreted  covered standing terracing for about 18000 so not likely to be a blueprint we could follow unfortunately

Aye, I've been saying the same for years.

The RDS was Iain Donald's folly...a vanity project that he had to have because every club in the country was building massive breeze block satnds at that time.

Can you imagine what the ground would look like if we'd developed the Beach End as it was ? Put better seats in, put a new roof on it....it would be a fantastic stand, the best in the country.

We could have joined up the south stand and a re-built Merkland at the same time, when we had the cash and when planning permission was easier.

But no, we built one massive, f*ck off huge, white elephant.

Our development problems stem from that short-sightedness.

Beach End was great for its time when it was standing and was still OK with benches until we handed it to away fans but don't think simply sticking in plastic seats and a new roof would have created the best stand in the country but agree RDS wasn't best use of cash either.

Dread to think how much money we wouldn’t have made had we not redeveloped the RDS, likely paid for itself comfortably and more, the commercial income just wasn’t there with the beach end

The RDS wasn't about some new seats though, it was about corporate hospitality, so a stand like that needed to be built, and as @NEMsays it's long since paid for itself.
